Acceptable Standards of Presentation

Please welcome back my guest speaker- Mandy Allen

Following on from ‘Complete Satisfaction Guaranteed’ I would now like to draw your attention to the overall impression your standard of presentation gives.  Poor grammar, spelling and punctuation can make a great difference to whether someone reads your document or casts it aside.

Often we become word blind whilst writing our products. We make basic mistakes that we simply do not see. We must always get 2 or 3 other competent people to read through our products before publishing. And there is no point in asking your best friend if they cannot spell either!

I have found that sometimes on my blog I click ‘publish’ and suddenly, there on the page staring at me, is a word out of place, a spelling mistake, a punctuation error, or a grammatical ridiculousness!

Some people simply do not know where punctuation should go, are not the best of spellers, or have no concept of delicate grammatical nuances. But they can write a good story, they can research a topic and create a guide, and they can present the whole thing in an attractive, easy to follow style.

These people should invest in a good proof reader/editor as the presentation of the product will ensure that their status as an expert in any chosen niche is not damaged by a poorly presented document.

You can think that no-one else will know about spelling, punctuation or grammar if you don’t; you can think that it doesn’t really matter; but pay attention to these little details and your whole document will look so much more tidy.

If you let this slip then something else will go, then something else, and suddenly you are producing a sequence of increasingly tatty looking products that may well have quality content, but if people cannot comfortably read them they will not come back for more products from you.

Strive to make your document stand out from the crowd by ensuring acceptable standards of presentation at all times. Let’s face it, we all have a mountain of poorly written examples sitting on our hard drives!

Mandy Allen.

  1. Excellent article Mandy! I’m still using the wordpress spellchecker and my hard cover dictionary to proof my writing. I sure can see the importance of having a dedicated spell and grammar checking tool on hand. :)

  2. Well said Mandy, we all make mistakes sometimes. Asking a couple of people to check things over is the sensible thing to do.

  3. Steve and Mandy,

Hey, I resemble those remarks. Even spell check has trouble with me. Sometimes I can’t even come close to the spelling of a word. But then you know that about me first hand, sdon’t you Mandy. ;-)
