Do What You Fear Not What You Love!

As Internet marketers, it seems that there is an endless list of tasks to complete especially if you are working as a one-man band and haven’t even considered outsourcing yet. If you are anything like me you probably make a list of the tasks you want to complete for the next day or even the next week.

It may read a little something like this:

Start audio creation
start video creation

And so on and so on….

Now I bet my bottom dollar that just like me you tend to go about starting and finishing the easier tasks on your list first or the tasks that most suit your capability range. Am I right? Well I know that was what I was indeed doing and although these tasks did need completing they were by no means urgent and this resulted in me ignoring the tasks that were going to propel my business to the next level and make me more money.

So I decided to face my fears and start completing the tasks that I had been putting off for months. One of those tasks was installing my new eBook webstore. Now I have never installed a scrip before or uploaded a webstore using SQL databases but I decided now was the time to learn.

It took a few hours research on the web to find all the instructions I needed but once I had them all written down I found that I was far more capable of doing this than I had imagined. I spoke to experts in forums whenever I became stuck and within a day I had my own webstore installed where I could sell all the eBooks with resell rights that I had collected over the years, thus creating a new income stream for myself.

I have to say that I felt a real sense of achievement not only because I had completed what before seemed like an impossible task but I also self taught myself something that I thought I would never be able to do.

Now I am sure sometime in the future I will outsource the technical side of my business so I can fully concentrate on my key strengths of marketing my business but my point here is not to put off what you fear as it may ultimately take your business to the next level.

I know have the knowledge of how to install scripts and create SQL databases, something I never thought I would be able to do before and all it took was a little get up and go and more importantly belief in myself and now no one can take that away from me.

Go on, take your business to the next level today!

Best of Luck!

  1. Hi Steve,

Very good post. I believe you are right and we should all stretch ourselves to expand our knowledge and learning. (I do struggle with the techie side though!)

    Enjoy the journey.

Thank you for your kind comments Mandy.

Once we stretch ourselves and complete a task outside our capability range the rest becomes child’s play.

    Regards,
    Steve

  2. Hi Steve,
Great post! And it really hit home. I’ve been putting off a few things because they are not particularly appealing to me but I think today is the day when I need to face my “fears.”
Also, I am curious about which store you set up. I am thinking of setting one up too…there a choices out there and I am not sure which way to go.
    Thanks for the inspiration…
    I’ll be back,
    Kathy

    Hi Kathy,

I putchased a pre loaded ebook store a few months ago but never had the confidence to set it up not knowing much about SQL databases but I decided to face my fears and go for it, so glad I did!

    Regards,
    Steve

  3. Hi Steve, A really interesting post. I do suffer on the technical side of this business, what is required is persistence!

( I do like your opt in box!)

    Regards, Ray.

    Hi Ray,

Thanks for your comments! The technie side can be tricky for most. I’m sure at some stage I’ll outsource that part of the business but at the moment I really enjoy learning it and beleive it will be an advantage later down the line.

    Regards,

    Steve

  4. Hi Steve
I found I was getting lost in all of the minutiae of the things that had to be done. So I remembered I had read your site and then I had to remember who had actually made that useful list for me. So my task was to search until I found you again. Well it didn’t take that long.
My problem is that the only thing I do consistently is to research and write what interests me – the marketing is definitely secondary. But I’ve come to realise that marketing has to come further up my priority list as success on the net is more marketing, tho the product does need to be good.
Task for this minute is to prioritise my tasks. This isn’t analysis paralysis – once I have a priority list somehow it gets done with ease. Thanks for this post.

    Hi Harriet,

Great work! I found life so much easier once I took the time to prioritise my work. A simple list at the beggining of each working day works well or the night before when it is fresh in your head.
Good luck and I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
