Do I Really Need SEO To Promote My Business?
Please keep in mind that these are just my personal opinions based on a fair bit of experience, I am not claiming to be the expert to end all experts on the subject of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), but I have learned a trick or two as I have gone along.
The short answer to this question if you are running an Internet business is yes. And in general I think most businesses can benefit from it. But in my experience it is far more complicated than that.
Marketing in general these days requires a whole new set of skills to the ones that were required ten years ago. Anyone who is relying solely on print, radio and TV advertising is living in the dark ages and probably paying the price in their bottom line. The Internet is an integral and vital part of any businesses marketing strategy. If you are an Internet business then this is the case even more so.
If you are an Internet marketer then you need to think of your website as your shop front. In order to sell your products, you first of all have to drag people through the front door. This is where SEO comes in.
So what is it exactly? That is a trickier question than you may think. Basically, when people want something on the Internet they usually head off to a well known search engine and input a few words related to what they are after. They then get a list of websites that may suit their needs. Your aim is for your business to come up on the first couple of pages of any search in your niche. Do you ever flick through more than the first few pages of search results? I know I don’t.
Search engines apparently work to a set of very complicated algorithms that determine how relevant your site is to the terms someone has entered. You want the search engine to think you are very relevant and pop you on the first page. How you best do that is a subject of much debate, I think there are a few over riding principles though that you should always follow. I will be going into those in more detail in my next post. In the meantime though I would like to leave you with one thought.
It is important to get people to your website, that goes without saying but a basic principle that a lot of Internet marketers forget when using SEO is that when someone steps through your front door that is not the end of the game. If they are greeting by dusty stock and intellectually challenged sales staff they will leave without buying a thing, so in real terms you have achieved nothing.
The same principle holds true for people who populate their site with terribly written articles just because they fit SEO requirements. Good SEO articles can help your site; bad SEO articles will damage it beyond measure.
All the best for now, I look forward to talking to you next time.
