Technology Is Changing And So Should Your Business

I just wanted to share with you a fascinating little video which demonstrates just how quickly technology is evolving and some fascinating facts about our planet. Enjoy!

I hope you enjoyed that short video and the insights it provided on how quickly technology is evolving and although the video is slightly outdated now (I think it was first released in 2008) it does bring me to a very important point;  Technology is changing and so should your business.

You see there really has never been a better time to start an online business, with the advancement in technology making it easier and easier for us to run a business right from our laptop.

After spending the last 2 years online running my business I have come across many free technological resources that have helped me run and in some instances automate my business. So my challenge to you is to try and find as many FREE useful resources as possible that can help improve and automate your business.

The technology is here so why not use it, right? It would also be great if we could make this post interactive and have everyone share at least one FREE online resource that helps them run/automate their business, just leave a comment below with your favourite.

Ill start the trend with one I recently discovered which stores all my online usernames and passwords, meaning I never have to fill in a form or remember a password again, which really does speed up the day to day running of my business as I am currently a member of over 450 different membership sites. It’s called LastPass and its totally free to download. I look forward to hearing everyone’s responses.

Your partner to success,
Steve.

  1. Hi Steve, great post and a great incentive to share our favourite freebies! I guess mine has to be cherry picker, from http://www.cherrypickersoftware.com. Basically it allows you to put in a keyword or keywords and then it tells you a lot of stats related to the phrase or word that help you to pick the best keywords to use. It’s brilliant!

    Enjoy the journey.

    Hey Mandy,

I totally agree as I also use cherry picker for my keyword research and have found it to be a brilliant resource which has saved me a lot of time and effort.

It just goes to show that there is a ton of free stuff out there that can help enhance our onlines businesses without the need to part with hundreds or thousands of dollars. I hope more and more marketers get involved in this post and share their best free online resources so we can have an entire list of freebies we can use for our own businesses.

  2. Hi Steve
I love the way technology changes so quickly, especially when we can take the opportunity to learn how to use it.

One of my favourite free online resources is an iPhone and Android App called AudioBoo. http://www.audioboo.com

I can record something really quickly and then have an audio recording made available to embed on my blog or send in an email…

it’s really cool for the times I don’t want to write 500 words and three minutes of me just chatting is easier…

    Take it easy
    cheers

    Hey Steve,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing that awsome resource. I will check this one out myself as I often struggle to find the time to bash out a 500 word post then do all the grammar and spell checking afterwards and this little app sounds perfect for just getting out whatever is on your mind and getting it uploaded to your blog or website in half the time. Thanks again sharing.

At the end it asked “What does it all mean?”

For me its the ultimate dream.

  5. My favorite free software would be my html editor, Page Breeze (http://www.pagebreeze.com/). I know that the widespread favorite is NVU, but I found it just wasn’t working quite right on my computer now that I’m running Windows 7. I just love the design of Page Breeze.

And although this isn’t directly related, my absolute two favorite computer utilities of all time are CCleaner (http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner), and Auslogics Disk Defrag (http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/). Both are completely free and do amazing things to keep my computer fast, and work 10 times better than Windows built in utilities.

And, by the way, I love that video. My boss sent it around the office one day to inspire discussion, and it was a lot of fun!

    Reply From Steve

    Hey Noelle,

I also use CCleaner and think it works really well for speeding up my laptop, it is also great for deleting cookies if you need to sign up for several different accounts in one day as some accounts are a bit funny about several account creations form one proxy and CCleaner does the job of hiding your footprint brilliantly. Thanks for stopping by and leaving your free online resources!

  10. Hi Steve,

Your post remind me of something I wrote:

“We all now live in an age where all of us are over-scheduled, over-worked and over-exposed with commercialism, always on the run, working hard over deadlines, just to keep our life together, yet missing all the “real and meaningful” stuff in our life…

Yes! The technology gets better, but our confusions and struggles seems to get triple as well!”

I believe that our technology advancement had hit the Wall during the dotcom melt down years ago. And now Technology is back but no longer only for Advancement…it now begin to EVOLVE.

The fact that you can simply make a few click and shared a video made on 2008 and inspired your reader, and the fact that me leaving my comment now to exchange ideas with you from another corner of the world is just a few Evolution of Technology as we know it.

Is HUMAN that drives Technology and not the other way round.

    Thank you for our post.

I have found that if you just work hard and are consistent you can go places . Look at the author of this article, they are clearly a hard worker and have just been consistent over time and are now enjoying at least what would appear as somewhat of a success. I would encourage everyone to just keep hustling and moving forward.

Cracking video and a great way of showing the way technology has changed. Life is certainly accelerating constantly. Just look at the communications tools we use now, even an old mobile phone has more power than computers had only a few years ago.

There are a number of free resources I use though the most important one would be
    Linux – OpenSuse http://www.opensuse.org/en/

Of course I don’t expect everyone will suddenly go out and change their operating systems immediately. However open source tools for Windows are abounding and
    GIMP http://www.gimp.org/windows/
will do most things Photoshop does,

    OpenOffice http://www.openoffice.org/
not only is a brilliant office suite but reads and writes Microsoft Office formats,

    and as previously mentioned
    Kompozer http://kompozer.net/
(the more up to date version of NVU) is capable of most things Dreamweaver does.

You really have started a great post and comments here and thanks to the other people who have posted some great links for things I never heard of.

    Good luck

The video makes you realise that even if you become hugely successful you have never made it for life as the sand you stand on is constantly shifting. Which is why I am glad the shift to social networking has taken place where knowledge can be shared instantly and the benefits to the generous are always there.

My favourite application would have to be http://www.jingproject.com/ This is basically Camtasias’ little brother, but the great thing is it is free. With this you can take screen captures, make videos with audio and instantly upload them.

Great idea to encourage people to share their applications, as there are so many programmers doing great things out there that it would be a full time job keeping up to date with them.

  39. I hope you have a good day! Very good article, well written and very thought out. I am looking forward to reading more of your posts in the future.

  40. Hi Steve,

The video is interesting even though some statements there like the one that China will soon become number one English speaking country are very questionable if not totally misleading.

China is not an English speaking country. English speaking country has English as one of the official languages like India, for example.

But the speed of the technological changes is getting exponential and in that the video is accurate. And that was also the reason you included it in your post.

I barely squeezed four years out of my old computer before it became useless forsome applications.

I don’t know if we all can keep up with technology but you are right that we should certainly keep on trying.

Isn’t great that social networking now allows us to share information so quickly with each other. I was just thinking that if we didn’t have the technology or free platforms like WordPress that allows us to start a blog then i wouldn’t even have been able to start this very blog post that is allowing so many of us to mix and share our favourite free online resources with each other. This very platform has allowed us to help each other grow our businesses just by sharing information with each other, its quite remarkable really! :)

Side note: We are collecting a ton of fantastic free resources now, so I would advise anyone visiting this post who wants to make the most of the free resources to:

1st - add this post to your favourites (press Ctrl D) so you can keep checking back for more and more free resources

2nd – check the comments and free resources left by visitors, then copy and paste the free resource links in each of the comments and add them to a favourites folder (press Ctrl D), example FOLDER: Free Resources For My Online Business.

One of my favorites is Google Docs. No, it’s nothing new and exciting or unheard of, but it sure saves me time and frustration! I love being able to have my docs all online to access from anywhere, and being able to easily share them with someone else when I need to. :) They rock! ;)

    Hi Rob,

I personally use the Flexibility Theme for my review websites, you can find them at: http://www.flexibilitytheme.com/.
Here is an example of one of my rewiew blogs with the theme if you would like to take a look: http://www.flipwebsitesforcash.net/.

Also if you want to set up a WP blog that doesn’t allow comments then simply login into the admin panel then go to:
    > Settings > Discussion > then uncheck the default article settings section where it says:
Allow people to post comments on new articles.

    I hope this help.

Even the simplest online resources can be so effective and I also find it very useful to have all my documents stored online, especially my guides and manuals where I can point my clients too them just by providing them a link to the online document. I agree. Technology is changing all the time.

  54. Hi Steve,

Cool video, I have seen the video a few times now and still find it amazing!

Your business needs to follow a continuous improvement cycle or it will die out.

Be mindful of your products and the dates they have on them is a good tip. If your products are dated keep on top of them and ensure all material, videos, audios etc are the latest versions.

    Great post Steve thanks.

    Hi Alex,

Thanks for your kind comments! The ban Craig mentioned was about the music on the video but as I explained in reply to Craig the video is not one I created myself but just a video I found interesting on Youtube. Apparently (I am not 100% on this) Youtube inititated a ban on certain copyrighted music being used in home-made videos but I beleive this video was created before the ban itself so it’s all good.

We look forward to seeing your free resources next time Alex!

    Hi Darren,

  69. Hi Steve that video is a bit of an eye opener, and it certainly brings home just how much technology in the world is changing.

I still remember having a ‘BBC model ‘B” computer back in the early 80′s, then my first IBM compatible PC, an Amstrad running windows whatever and Dos, powered by an ’8086′ processor which in hind site was probably not much more powerful that a good pocket calculator.

I also remember the first ‘start a business from home’ information product I bought from Andrew Reynolds back in 1999!, and I’ve still got it (and a few more… might start a small info product museum when I make my first million and buy a bigger house!) A simple spiral bound book with a green cover and plastic protector sheet, no graphics apart from a crude black printed picture on the front cover, no web links or anything like that… think it cost me £39.95.

Back in those days I had the desire for a better life, but neither the understanding, determination or the commitment, hence before the end of 2001 I stopped looking at these products.

Fast forward to 2008 and I found myself in a situation where I had accrued big family responsibilities and a serious drain on my earnings…that’s when my desire was reawakened and this time matched with the determination to create change.

Over the years I have seen info products take big leaps forward in complexity and usability (and some fancy technological innovation), especially in the last two years where almost weekly I am amazed by some of the products being released… I often feel like a kid in a candy store!.

But my favourite product at the moment is Brad Callen’s PPC WebSpy,

    http://www.ppcwebspy.com/

This is a plugin for firefox which allows you to see what keywords other people are using with their ads on google, it also tells you how much they are paying for those keywords, a very useful tool, even if you dont use pay per click advertising because you can see which keywords are most popular, there is a free limited version, which is certainly worth trying out.

    Best regards
    Pete Chapman

  70. Hi Steve. I’ve seen that video before but its still very powerful. I also use CCleaner and Defraggler to clean up my computer whenever it starts running slow. And I use Avast to protect it. For anyone who hasn’t mastered using video online yet, you can create a 30 second video using text, images and music for free at animoto then insert the code they give you on your site for added content/interest/stickability.

  74. Hi Steve,

Technology is changing all the time and no matter what you have at the moment, the next it’s shifting. So I tend to stay away from hardware which have short lifespans. The only counterproductive solution to that is having software which regularly becomes updated or is supported by a large audience.

One of those freebies is Google. Yes, I can’t live without Google Docs and it’s whole suite of e-mail, office, search, etc. While it is the mongol online in terms of traffic generation, it’s basic is still providing needs to regular users.

    Hi Thu,

I absolutley agree and it’s always best when downloading software to check that they are regularly updated.

One of the best automated software’s suites I use has to be SENuke, which I use to basically dominate Google 1st page for my chosen keywords. This software is so powerful that I literally use it in just a few short minutes to automate tasks that would normally take me around 15 man hours to complete, such as uploaidng multiple articles, videos, blog posts, rss feeds – all leading to more baclinks and traffic to my websites. There is also a SENuke Free Trial available and they are constantly updating their software to make it the most cutting edge on the market!

I also agree that I couldn’t live without Google’s basic features such as email, adsense, analytics, docs, they really do offer so many free resources that all help us with our online business tasks and activities.

  80. Wow. That video was something. Mind boggling.

When it comes to my favorite free technology, it’s hard to choose. First would be WordPress. Though I do pay for hosting (by choice), you can easily set up a blog for free.

Second, and in conjunction with blogging and website ownership would be Google Webmaster Tools. So much data at your fingertips. Free. It’s unbelievable.

  126. Hey Steve,

Great video! I had never seen it before and was impressed by the statistics. It’s wild to think we are training for jobs NOW that haven’t been defined.

I, too, remember my first computer. Cost over $1000 in the early 90′s and only had 500mb. Huge tower and monitor! But it was pretty impressive to me. Never dreamed I’d have a laptop!

Lots of my favorite tools have been mentioned, but I have another one to take a look at. I use a free autoresponder that doesn’t have tons of ads. It’s got the same features as the pay autoresponders. Take a look at: http://www.listwire.com.

  136. Hi Steve,

    I finally got here!! :P

What an amazing video! I sat in awe listening to it and then looked at my child wondering what she will be doing in 20 years time!

The world is such a different place now to what it was 20 years ago to 10 years ago to only a year ago. It fascinates me.

The future is going to be so different. I can see the day when parents won’t have to send their children to school because they will be able to go via webinar. The internet will become the school room of the future so much more than what it is already.

The internet world allows people to move around if they want to.

Regarding the free online resources. This post is perfect for the challenge. Once you have the list compiled you should put it into a free report you can give away for list building!

Re the challenge! This is going pretty well. I have started my rounds of visiting everyone plus I am compiling a table of who has visited everyone and who is still yet to visit.

Double check your spam folder just in case a fe people end up there. I have had a few people end up in mine. Randy Smith for one, must be the name  He jokes about it all the time!

OK now my freebie I like. “Google Reader” I like the fact that I can collect the RSS feeds of websites I am interested in and keep them all organised and stay up to date when people update their sites. It cut down a lot of my blog hopping time when I first found it.

    Keep up the challenge!

    Cheers

  138. Hi Steve,

Many thanks for sharing the video.

Whilst technology does change day to day, year to year, I take great strength from the fact that human psychology will always be the same. The way in which people buy people and buy from those they have faith in will never change.

The great copywriters from decades gone understood this and I fear not enough internet marketers take these same thoughts on board and see the opportunity to excel in this department by prioritizing copy writing as a must have skill … because this is the clear differentiator.

Anyway that’s a rant for another day and only in so much I wish I had learnt this 10 years ago when I started internet marketing and not 5 years ago.

Technology will continue to offer an immense amount of information at our finger tips but the winners will be ones that use it to solve our prospects’ problems and pain with their info.

The best free tool for me is Google Docs, though I do have reservations about relying on a free service to host important data.

    Kind Regards

  139. Hi Steve,

Cool video and truly thought provoking! I was in the information technology business for over 20 years and have been away from the corporation side for the last 15 years now. I am sure I would need a lot of refresher training to get back up to speed.

I am always amazed when I watch my own children and what they teach me about technology. I’m even behind on video games and how to use them, as they do. The last time I could win games against my current 9 year old son was when he was 5. Sad, but true!

Technology passes us all so very quickly and we should try to keep up with areas that truly interest us. If in doubt, ask a kid!

    All the best!

  162. Hi Steve

With all due respect to the other Challengers who made some excellent posts, your idea has to be the best. I’m sure we’ve all learned about some great free resources that we didn’t know of before.

Some of my favourites that have already been mentioned are Gimp, Open Office (especially its ability to easily convert a document to a .pdf file) and, of course, WordPress.

A couple I like that haven’t been mentioned are http://www.photobucket.com that I use to store photos of my eBay products so I don’t have to pay eBay fees to include additional images, and http://www.brocksoft.co.uk/diskaudit.php which analyses disk space usage when you start to wonder where all your free space has gone.

As for the video, although we all know that technology develops at an incredible speed, some of the statistics are still amazing – especially for us old codgers who can remember when hardly anyone had TVs, cars, telephones or even refrigerators :-)

Thanks to everyone for sharing these great resources.

I really wanted to create an interactive post for the challenge where everyone gets involved and shares their knowledge which has turned exactly as I wanted it too. We now have so many fantastic free resources that we can all use in our own online businesses without shelling out hundreds of dollars on expensive alternatives.

Also thanks for sharing your free resources such as photobucket, this is one that I am sure evan many savvy ebayers didn’t know about (including myself) and this will save a lot of money on images that we use to promote our products on ebay so well done!

    Regards,

However, I must thank many of the commenters above, who have saved me an awful lot of homework finding free resources for both me, and my readers.
